What are the CDC Guidelines?

Guidelines for COVID-19 vaccine and specimen storage, handling and transport.

Vaccine Transport

The CDC Vaccine storage and handling tool kit (2019), states that frozen vaccines must be transported, in a portable vaccine freezer unit or qualified container and pack out that maintains temperatures between -50°C and -15°C (-58°F and +5°F)

Viral Transport Medium

The CDC SOP# DSR-052-04 recommends that Viral Transport Medium be stored Refrigerated (+2C to +8°C) and issues a “DO NOT FREEZE” warning.

Specimen Transport Kit

The CDC Guidelines for specimen transport (CDC-006-00019 Rev 05 effective July 13, 2020) recommends placing the specimen swab immediately into a sterile tube containing 1-3ml of appropriate transport media, then store the specimen Refrigerated (+2C to +8°C), and ship overnight on ice-pack.

Laboratory Reagents

The CDC Guidelines for specimen transport (CDC-006-00019 Rev 05 effective July 13, 2020) recommends to store dried primers, probes, and the positive control, nCoVPC, at 2-8°C until re-hydrated for use and Store liquid HSC control materials at ≤ -20°C.
